About Us

Organized by Tournament director Barry Heffernan, the Highlands Spring Striped Bass Tournament is a New Jersey charity fishing tournament with all proceeds being donated to  Jason’s Dreams for Kids. Additionally, each captain has the option to have their catch filleted and donated to the local food banks and soup kitchens. Each year this fishing tournament also donates several hundred pounds of filets.  In addition to the tournament’s charitable aspects, it also promotes good stewardship of the fishery by encouraging tournament captains to participate in the live release division. During the 2010 Tournament, Harold Smith on Scales & Stripes  successfully tagged and released a  52.1 lb Striped Bass.

img_5305Barry Heffernan has been running the spring striped bass tournament for the past 10 years to benefit Jason’s Dreams and the local food banks and soup kitchens.  Each year our goal was to make it bigger for the charities and better for the fisherman.  Without being able to control weather and how the fish are biting we took control of the tournament.  It has now become a weekend of fishing rather than just a few hours.  Our picnic has surpassed our expectations and everyone enjoys the pig roast, and all the food that is donated from the local restaurants. In turn the restaurants, local tackle shops, and everyone that has a hand in making this event a success gets the word out about their business.

This is a great tournament where everyone comes out a winner.  Whether it is the fisherman who caught the biggest fish, or the other fishermen who spent the weekend fishing, while donating their catches to help the local soup kitchen. The work to make this all happen can be hard and tedious, but the the residual effects of what comes from that weekend helps a lot of people, and we really do contribute to make someones dreams come true.

About Jason’s Dreams for Kids

Jason's Dreams for KidsJason’s Dreams for Kids, Inc. is devoted to granting wishes to children diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses.  Bringing a little happiness and putting a few smiles on these children’s face and hopefully their parents faces is our goal.

Jason’s Dreams for Kids, holds a variety of fundraising events to meet the cost of fulfilling these children’s wishes.  Almost every penny of your donation goes directly to the children and is tax-deductible to the extent of the law.

Jason’s Dreams was founded by Dennis McGinnis, a resident of Middletown who owns a printing business in Red Bank.

McGinnis has put smiles on hundreds of kids’ faces to keep a promise he made with his nephew, Jason Douglas Creager, who died in 1992 after losing his battle with cancer.

“About a month before my nephew passed away, he called me and told me what he wanted for Christmas,” McGinnis said. “I told him whatever he wanted, I would get, as long as I could. He said he didn’t want to die.”

McGinnis said his nephew told him if he could not cure him, he wanted his uncle to promise that he would never forget him.

That year, the organization was founded in memory of Jason, and McGinnis saw to it that any child who had a life-threatening illness that he came in contact with got to see his or her dream come true, whether it be meeting a famous person or flying on an F-14 fighter jet.

We encourage you to please come out and support the kids for this great cause while doing something you love, Fishing!
